Christina Be, BC PULSE Student Volunteer

At Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly, we have a Highlight of the Week series where we shine a spotlight on members of the LBFE community including board members, older adults, volunteers, students, staff, CitySites (and more!) to learn about them and their experiences with LBFE. This week’s highlight is of one of our new Boston College PULSE student volunteers, Christina Be! Read on to learn more about Christina:

Please tell us a little about yourself (PULSE, major, hobbies, etc.)

Hi, my name is Christina and I am a current senior at Boston College studying Marketing and Information Systems. I grew up in Watertown and went to middle & high school in Boston. At BC, I am a part of Masti, BC’s only Bollywood fusion dance team and I love it. I can’t wait to start performing dances on and off campus.

What inspired you to get involved with LBFE?

I was fortunate enough to have grown up with both sets of grandparents. I spent most of my childhood surrounded by elders and it has been rewarding. Also, I have many friends who have volunteered with LBFE and they have said that it has been an incredible experience. I’ve always received unconditional love (and good food) from my grandparents, which is why I am involved with LBFE. Everyone deserves unconditional love, regardless of their age.

What skills/talents are you able to contribute to a site?

I know how to cook a mean stirfry, play many card games, knit, crochet, fold origami, Bollywood dance, and play the ukulele! I would be happy to share some of my skills.

Describe your favorite memory with an older adult.

My favorite memory with an older adult is with my grandma a few weekends ago. We went to my favorite udon noodle restaurant and waited in line for about an hour. By the time we ordered our meals, we were both very hungry and each ordered a large bowl. My grandma finished first, proudly clearing the bowl of its contents and the chef was so amazed that she ate it all! He gave her a big smile and shook her hand. It was a very touching moment.

What are you most looking forward to during your service time with LBFE?

I am most looking forward to getting to know the members of my site, making friends, and introducing other elders to each other!

Remember to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted then!
