Sylvia Cao, NU Service-Learning Student

At Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly, we have a Highlight of the Week series where we shine a spotlight on members of the LBFE community including board members, older adults, volunteers, students, staff, CitySites (and more!) to learn about them and their experiences with LBFE. This week’s highlight is of one of our Northeastern University Service-Learning student volunteers, Sylvia Cao. She was asked to share a little about herself and her experience so far volunteering at one of our CitySites (70 St. Botolph) this summer. Below is her reflection:

Hi, my name is Sylvia. I come from Beijing, the capital of China. I just arrived in the U.S two months ago. I am kind of an interpersonal and like sharing interesting things with friends! The reason why I chose Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly as my voluntary program of Community Learning is because I love spending time with elderly as they can give me a sense of belonging. I spend most of my spare time with my grandma, she is pretty cute and kind,I miss her every single day since I’ve come to Boston.

As far as I am concerned, the experiences at Little Brothers are successful and interesting. There was no difficulty for me to communicate with them, they are very sweet and friendly, sometimes they will provide delicious food for us. I enjoy playing games whether it’s a card game, dice game or coloring.

The most valuable thing I have learned so far while being at 70 St. Botolph is about the current situation of citizens in Boston and Yahtzee, which is the first native game of America.

I want to practice my English while in this experience working with older adults and learn more about their culture and what people think. Then I can be more comfortable when I live and study in Boston.

Remember to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted then!
