Blanca Naglestad, Boston College PULSE Volunteer
At Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly, we have a Highlight of the Week series where we shine a spotlight on members of the LBFE community including board members, older adults, volunteers, students, staff, CitySites (and more!) to learn about them and their experiences with LBFE. This week’s highlight is of one of our new Boston College PULSE student volunteers, Blanca Naglestad! Read below to learn more about Blanca:
Hello! My name is Blanca Naglestad, and I’m a PULSE student at Boston College. PULSE is a full-year Philosophy/Theology course where we apply what we learn at our service sites to different philosophical and Biblical themes to create a more contemporary and personal context for analyzing the pieces and their messages. Although I’m a freshman, my current major is Psychology in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences. When I’m not studying, you can find me baking (I can make a pretty good chocolate chip cookie), at ROTC training, watching a movie, or running around the reservoir. I call a small, rural town in New Jersey home with my parents, my grandmother, and our dog Walt.
I chose to serve with LBFE, because I love it’s mission of providing companionship and friendship to those who need it most. My grandmother attended a similar program back home, and she said just having a conversation partner and people to connect with made all the difference in the world. Consequently, my primary goal at LBFE is to form relationships and get to know people who I wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to meet. The skills I bring to my CitySite are my ability to maintain and create conversation with new people, patience, and my ability to listen. I hope to gain experience having to navigate multiple types of people, leadership, organization, and most importantly forming genuine friendships with those at my service site. And that is what I’m most excited for, learning about other people, how they got where they are, what experiences they’ve gained, and with any luck, we’ll both leave better for it.
Don’t forget to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted then!
