Guillaume Dupaquier, Boston College PULSE Volunteer
At Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly, we have a Highlight of the Week series where we shine a spotlight on members of the LBFE community including board members, older adults, volunteers, students, staff, CitySites (and more!) to learn about them and their experiences with LBFE. This week’s highlight is of one of our new Boston College PULSE student volunteers, Guillaume Dupaquier! Read below to learn more about Guillaume:
My name is Guillaume, and I am a 19-year-old student from Mamaroneck, New York currently studying at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management. Although I was born in New York and lived there my entire life, I have a French name and accent due to my heritage. Indeed, I am the first American born citizen in my family and speak French at home with my parents and siblings, all the while having attended the French-American School of New York. Home for me is both New York, and Izaourt, a small secluded village in the South of France where my family is from. Although this dual-citizenship, and the ability to know these two opposites is great, it means I live far from my extended family, including my grand-parents. This is one of the reasons which drove me to volunteer at LBFE.
I currently am enrolled in Boston College’s PULSE program which is a yearlong course with the goal of educating students about social issues and having them serve within often marginalized communities in Boston. Through this program I discovered LBFE and decided to work with them this year, during which I hope to meet many interesting people all the while dedicating my time and energy to some of Boston’s elderly communities. Hopefully, Little Brothers will be an opportunity for me to not only give but also receive both experience and happiness from this community while getting better at listening, conversing and being patient. This service will give me a chance to discover parts of Boston that I wouldn’t have the chance to stumble on otherwise and give me a weekly break from classes and school work to clear my head and think of something else for once. Overall, I look forward to giving the most I can to the elderly communities of Boston through Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, all the while meeting new and interesting people with whom I can either have meaningful conversations or simply play a board game.
Remember to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted then!
