Isabella Hwang, NU SL Student Participant
I am 20 years old and from Auburn, Alabama. Throughout my childhood, I have been back and forth between Korea and the United States multiple times, which makes it hard to determine where my real home is. I, however, call Korea as my home, since I am able to culturally connect more with Korea with the help of my family. I am excited to meet and interact with many people with different cultural backgrounds while working at Little Brother Friends of the Elderly, Boston. I am part of Northeastern Service-Learning, which is a program that integrates academics and community service to achieve classroom goals. The course I am currently taking is particularly focused on the contemporary issues in health; we are interested in the many modern controversial topics in the health care system as well as some in the past. Working with Little Brothers will provide opportunities not only to interact and communicate with different people, both elders and other volunteers in the community but also to learn different perspectives and cultures through numerous conversations and interactions I will be making.
As a future pharmacist, I believe this opportunity will serve as an important backbone in serving and emotionally connecting with different age groups. I have had numerous volunteer experiences with the elderly in the past which led me to choose to work with Little Brothers. I have volunteered in both a hospital setting and nursing homes where I held little holiday concerts and became a companion to talk with. I wish I can integrate organizational and communication skills that I have acquired in the past as well as knowledge in technology, thus exhibiting my greatest potential while working at Little Brothers since I will be helping with the Tech Cafe at Grove Hall. I am looking forward to working with elders, other volunteers, and co-workers for the fall semester.
