Mary Wilkinson, Boston College PULSE Team Leader

Hi! My name is Mary Wilkinson, and I am a sophomore at Boston College. I am currently a Neuroscience major on the pre-health track. I hope to pursue a career as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine which is a physician that emphasizes patient care through holistic and homeopathic methods. My love for science and medicine comes from my grandmother who was a nurse for over 30 years. I am originally from Dover, Massachusetts, but for the past 8 years I have lived in Raleigh, North Carolina. In my free time you can find me hanging out with friends and exploring the city of Boston or curled up watching a movie or reading a book.

Since deciding to attend BC, I have had my heart set on taking a course called PULSE. In PULSE, we not only learn about philosophy and theology but get to incorporate and experience themes and ideas from class through weekly volunteering with an organization. I am so lucky to get a chance to work with LBFE!

I wanted to work with LBFE because of my past experience with older adults. In high school, I helped take care of my grandmother who had suffered from multiple strokes. It was from everyday interacts with her that lead me to seek out volunteering at an assisted living facility. I later worked as an activities coordinator and helped plan fun events and excursions to keep people engaged with one another. As I started at Boston College, I truly missed all the lovely relationships I had made and volunteering at LBFE allows me to continue this passion in Boston! Sometimes we don’t acknowledge the importance of human interaction. Often the geriatric population is overlooked. I hoped to serve as a good conversationalist and a catalyst for engagement in these communities.

Don’t forget to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted then!
