Jen Barker, Boston College PULSE student volunteer

At Little Brothers- Friends of the Elderly, we are pioneering a new Highlight of the Week series where we shine a spotlight on members of the LBFE community including board members, older adults, volunteers, students, staff, CitySites (and more!) to learn about them and their experiences with LBFE. Our first highlight is of one of our PULSE students from Boston College, Jen Barker.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jen and I am a volunteer for Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly through the PULSE program at Boston College. I am a sophomore studying Finance and Accounting with a minor in history, but I am originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Why did you choose to volunteer with LBFE this year?

I chose Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly as my volunteer placement because it didn’t seem like volunteer work. It’s important for the elders to talk and play games with people, but at the same time it’s also very enjoyable.

What has been your favorite memory with LBFE?

My favorite memory of Little Brothers has to be playing Dominos at the Patricia White CitySite. I learned how to play from one of the elders there and we have not stopped playing since.

What has been the most valuable aspect of serving with LBFE?

I think the most valuable aspect of Little Brothers is that we get to befriend the people we work with so they are more than just elders, they are people we listen to for advice and learn from every week.

Be sure to check out next week’s blog to see who will be highlighted!
